BIRMINGHAM: Ben Stokes came up with an inspirational show on Saturday morning to hand England a win in the first Test. But Joe Root is likely to miss Stokes for the Joe Root starting on August 9.
Stokes will appear at Bristol Crown Court on Monday having been charged with affray following a brawl in the city’s streets in September last year. He has pleaded not guilty and is trying to clear his name in court. The only chance of Stokes being available for the second Test is if the hearing gets adjourned on Monday.
But the team management seems to be resigned to the fact that they would miss Stokes and Chris Woakes is likely to come into the team in his place. Woakes, too, is recuperating from an injury, but the English think-tank hopes that the allrounder will be fit to take Stokes’ place, if necessary.
England captain Joe Root, though, said that they would welcome Stokes back the moment he is done with the legal hassles. “When he turns up to practise or as soon as he puts on an England shirt he’s so dedicated to this group of players and to this team. Whatever happens going forward, he’s going to be a big part of this dressing room,” Root said.
