Whether you’re a child reading a fairy tale or an adult resenting sky-high rents for a tiny flat, most of us have longed to live in a grand castle at some point in our lives. But while the most famous castles of all still belong to monarchs or states, there are plenty of incredible chateaux on the market too. Here are some of the castles we’d love to live in, from famous fortresses occupied by royalty to palatial properties you can really buy.

Castles don’t get much more fairy tale than Bavaria’s Neuschwanstein Castle, which was built in the 19th century and which is visited by over a million tourists every year. Built by King Ludwig II to withdraw from a life in the public, there’s nothing minimalist about this castle, with the many lavish rooms and halls all designed for one single occupant. The romantic castle is even said to have inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Built in the 14th century, the grand Castellar Castle, in Italy’s Piedmont region, is currently on sale for £2.2 million ($3m). The castle has eight bedrooms, five bathrooms and multiple reception areas, giving prospective buyers plenty of space, but most eye-catching are its grand traditional features, from its drawbridge and fortified gate to its stone staircase and high ceilings. Within the extensive grounds, there’s also a swimming pool and fountain.

The castle, set within 34 acres of its own parkland near St. Andrews, once played host to monarchs including Mary Queen of Scots. Dating back almost 11 centuries, the castle has had a colourful and fascinating history, with its initial motte and bailey fort built by William the Conqueror in 1068, and many battles and sieges taking place over the following centuries. The whole castle, including its towers and ramparts, has been extensively restored.

The imposing Gothic fortress of Bran Castle, located in Transylvania, is best-known as the castle that inspired the tale of Count Dracula. First coming into existence in the 13th century, the castle is now a popular tourist attraction visited by hundreds of thousands of people a year. A competition run in 2016 by Airbnb even allowed two people to spend the night in the fortress, with their beds for the evening consisting of velvet-trimmed coffins.

It’s had a fascinating history, acting as everything from a royal residence to an army base, and is home to Scotland’s dazzling crown jewels.

The majestic Hohenzollern Castle looks like it’s stepped straight out of a Disney film. Located in Baden-Württemberg, the castle sits atop Mount Hohenzollern and offers incredible views. With a history dating back to the 11th century, the castle went through various reconstructions until it got its incredible Neo-Gothic appearance in the 19th century. Sadly, the chances of us ever living in this castle are unlikely, as it’s owned by Prince George Frederick of Prussia, but it’s open to visitors.

This exquisite, Grade I-listed chateau in central France was built in the 15th century and still retains many of its most fascinating original features, including 14 towers and two drawbridges. There’s also a 37-acre private park complete with forests and lakes to explore. Priced at £6.12 million ($8.3m).

The magnificent Chateau de Chambord is right at the top of the list of castles we’d love to call our own. One of France’s most famous castles, the chateau is a sprawling French Renaissance wonder that was first constructed in the 16th century by Francois I, who wanted to use it as a weekend retreat. With 440 rooms, 84 staircases and 365 fireplaces, we’d be happy to use it all week too.

If you’re interested in a major property project, look no further than this unusual Ecuadorian castle in Pichincha. While it’s in need of some updating, it’s a fascinating building constructed with a mixture of seven different architectural styles. It has an enormous 10,000 square metres of floor space which includes 50 bedrooms and 60 bathrooms. As well as the main castle, there’s also a cathedral and a huge park. On the market for £5.76 million ($6.56m).

One of the largest complexes in the world, moving to the stunning Prague Castle would certainly be a step up the property ladder. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was founded in the ninth century and has an enormous area of almost 70,000 square metres. It’s currently the office of the President of the Czech Republic, so the chances of us moving in are minimal, but it’s open all year round for visits.

While France is blessed with countless beautiful castles, Chateau de Chenonceau has to be one of its most exquisite. Located in the Loire Valley, the castle’s history dates all the way back to the 12th and 13th centuries, although in its current form was built in the early 16th century. While we’d love to live there for its incredible waterfront location, we’d also rather enjoy wandering the corridors admiring the castle’s collection of tapestries, furniture and artwork.

One of only four 12th-century castles still standing in France, living in this castle would be a dream for anyone with an interest in history: it’s said that Richard the Lionheart died here and was buried in the grounds.
